designer profile emily colley

I am Emily Colley and I am the founder & creative director of the new luxury lingerie & loungewear brand AEMILIA Couture.

After four years working in the fashion industry with a background of designing & manufacturing garments for luxury designers & retail brands, one year ago a started my journey to become a lingerie & nightwear designer/dressmaker for my own luxury label.

What inspired you to become a lingerie designer?

I have always loved to travel to fashion exhibitions, art galleries and flea markets all over the World, and take inspiration, swatches and sketch ideas. I have a love of luxurious textures and quality craftsmanship from a bygone era and have always researched heritage techniques. After studying Fashion Design, dressmaking and the art of couture within ladies clothing at University, my own desire for creating classic, captivating ladies lingerie & sleepwear inspired by the boudoir era of the 1920’s & 30’s, where garments exuded decadence & femininity began.

What makes your designs different from others?

At AEMILIA Couture my aim has always been to create beautiful garments made for women, by women designed & hand crafted in England. We offer bespoke, custom requests & personalisation to our clients, enabling customers to explore a diverse range of exclusive materials & trims for sizes 6-26 available in petite, regular & tall lengths.

Each print is designed and researched carefully, all of which are hand drawn, and printed in England, I really enjoy creating them, as they tell a story, which adds to the desire and distinguishability of my collections.

Are there any celebrities wearing your designs and who are they?

In January we showcased S/S18 ‘AMARA’ Collection at a press day where influencers, stylists, celebs and bloggers viewed the range which was very exciting. Thus, we have just appointed CiCI PR to represent AEMILIA Couture, so fingers crossed we will see celebrities wearing the new collections this year.

Do you wear your own products?

Yes, of course. I have just been on holiday and wore the ‘Amara printed silk kimono’ and ‘Amara printed night shirt’ which are transitional designs that can be styled for either evening to daywear. I also love wearing the Amara Oyster camisole set on a chilled weekend getaway, as the pearlescent soft silk makes you feel beautifully feminine and elegant inside and out.

What’s your favourite lingerie brand (not your own!) and why?

I have always admired Couture lingerie designer, Carine Gilson. Her collections are timeless and classic, and the workmanship and technique particularly  how they inlay lace is so intricate and exquisite. Carine has just started introducing beautiful exotic prints into loungewear, which are divine.

Do you think there’s enough choice for D+ sizes?

We make bralettes which go up to a C cup and underwire bras to an 38 E cup, though we do not specialise in larger sizes as this is a specialist area. We get requests very often for custom made soft cup bras from customers all over the world in larger sizes. I think it is great that there has recently been an increase in British lingerie brands that specialise in D+ sizes, as this was an area that had previously not been explored enough, and their designs are becoming more beautiful and diverse.

Are you happy with the way lingerie is sized? If not what changes would you like to see?

Every woman’s shape is different. The average size in the UK Is a 16 and lingerie can be a difficult garment to fit universally and it can be frustrating for women when they vary in bra size depending on which brand they choose. We aim to provide helpful guides to both male and female clients about how to measure, and how to select the right size dependent on style and fit.

What advice would to give to an aspiring lingerie/swimwear designer?

Know your customer well, and carry out essential initial research into the product sector and market to ensure there is a niche before you develop your brand. Also – never loose sight of your dreams and aspirations.

How do you get your inspirations for new collections?

I feel I am most inspired when I am exploring renowned galleries such as the V&A in London, venturing behind the scenes to view and analysing vintage couture pieces from the 1920’s/30’s. This was such a beautifully feminine era and the pinnacle point in time for lingerie design. I find it so exciting and refreshing being around creative people in these environments.

Do you use paper and pencil to design your first draft or is it all done on computer?

All my designs and illustrations begin with pencil and paper, and then drape lace and silk on a bust form giving life to that initial idea, until I reach the stage where I need to do technical drawings for production. My bespoke prints for each season begin by hand, and then I manipulate and develop them on software packages ready for print.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a designer?

I am naturally a creative and would always want to be doing something design or art related. However, living on a farm I have developed a great interest in caring for animals so maybe I would of studied veterinary?

What are you working on right now?

We have just completed the A/W 18 ‘ARIANA’ Collection featuring the ‘Jardin de la Nuit’ print which will be released from September this year. We are focusing on raising the profile and awareness of the brand to both trade and consumers, working with our appointed PR company, and planning trade exhibition spaces for 2019 which is very exciting.

What makes a great lingerie model?

I would say someone who feels comfortable in their own skin and at ease with the camera. Someone who can showcase your products and convey the image that you want effortlessly.

A Valentine's Day Guide to buying your loved one lingerie…

Emily Colley

A gentlemans gift guide

valentines day

The contemporary gentlemen wants to see their loved one in lingerie for valentines day, and the best way to do that is to buy the delicate, beautiful unique pieces for her yourself. Our designer Emily Colley, answers questions on everything when buying luxury lingerie and has created this ‘Guide to buying lingerie’ to ensure you have the best chance of surprising your loved one as we understand selecting and purchasing lingerie can be a daunting task.

1.     How do I figure out her bra/underwear size?

You are not alone when you don’t know your loved ones lingerie size. Sizing can be complicated to understand and gentlemen don’t often like to ask. However, one of the most important aspects of choosing lingerie is the size. Lingerie that is a poor fit can cause discomfort and a odd appearance under clothes.

If you feel comfortable to do so, find a few bras and pairs of knickers that your loved one may have in her draw and jot down the size on the small label. For a bra this will say ‘34b’ for example and for underwear the label should say ‘ XS, or 8’. With these sizes it is most likely that this is accurate. We have a sizing guide on our website which explains different sizing for lingerie and nightwear with different conversions for a wide variety of countries. When purchasing via our online boutique each size can be selected individually.

The cups of our creations are adapted to the cup B& C predominantly, which are the most common. If your lady has a smaller or deeper cup, or it is very small or tall, we advise you to opt for a on-measure customised order, or send us an enquiry form so we can advise where you can choose the cup & the length of the garment .

2.     What style of lingerie do I buy?

When buying lingerie, it is important to know all the options. There are see-through bras, full coverage bras, and a range of cami tops. There are many different kinds of underwear such as thong, hipster, high waisted, and skirt underwear. There are one piece outfits such as teddies, vests, nightgowns, and baby doll tops all of which come in different styles and colour ways.

Discovering her style – which of the below describes her taste in day-to-day wear? We have placed an image of pieces from our boutique under each.

- Likes comfortable, easy to wear pieces that are elegant

- Wears bold, statement clothing

- Loves daring, exotic, revealing clothing

- Enjoys wearing delicate, refined and classic clothing

- Has a passion for vintage, loves one of a kind pieces

Amara sets-03.jpg

It is often the case that her style can be defined from the above. If you are really unsure then a refined, classic piece with colour is often a lovely choice.

3.     Why is it important to chose lingerie with a good fit?

A well-constructed underwire bra is essential. The shape and contours of a woman are so specific that in order to get a well fitting bra, it needs to be constructed with the utmost quality. Exclusive, designer brands really are the best, as the sizing has been expertly calculated. The lingerie industry hasn't really grown the way the ready-to-wear industry has, and there aren't that many factories that can make a well fitting bra.  At Aemilia Luxurious couture lingerie & loungewear we specialise in beautifully handcrafted garments created from fine silk & Chantilly lace, stitched in the designer’s English workshop.

The classic heritage of elegant vintage styling & historic dressmaking is combined with creativity & traditional craftsmanship. Inspired by the elegance, decadence & international influences of the 1920’s & 1930’s in France. The new collection is synonymous with delicate touches & intricate details showcasing true craftsmanship & technique throughout. The classic styles within this collection are refined, yet contemporary with beautifully designed silhouettes for sizes 6-26.

4.     What can I guarantee buying from Aemilia?

Each designer collection is researched & developed carefully, sourcing only the most beautiful fabrics & trims, creating ladies silk satin lingerie & sleepwear for the new season. We create the most desirable; elegant pieces which co-ordinate from range to range each season, with a distinguishable style across lingerie, silk underwear, slip dresses, kimonos, robes, nightgowns, nightwear, pyjamas, sleepwear, accessories & bridal lingerie. Creation, exclusiveness and contemporary silhouettes for women of all sizes is the ethos of the brand. We pride ourselves in exceptional quality and fit, ensuring that all sizes are catered for, enabling the client to feel beautifully feminine & confident.

We also offer bespoke, custom requests & personalisation to our clients, enabling customers to explore a diverse range of exclusive materials & trims for sizes 6-26 available in petite, regular & tall lengths.

5.     Is there an occasion for the luxury lingerie or loungewear?

Ask yourself, where do you intend on the lingerie to be seen? Will there be a romantic get- away or a special occasion for valentines? For each occasion, a different set of lingerie is required. Everyday lingerie can be worn for everyday situations such as work, a weekend at home, or when visiting parents. During a date, a more sexy lingerie set can be worn. To spice up a relationship, there are many different lingerie outfits designed to make bedroom time more interesting.

Do you want to buy something that you’d like to see your loved one in or something you are sure she would be comfortable in? If so, this gift needs to be beautifully, luxurious and special. Therefore, would you require a set? We have illustrated some examples of sets below of lingerie and loungewear that we have recommended.

To view these sets within our online boutique, and more please explore here

6.  Would you like a bespoke or custom request?

We specialise in one a kind pieces, which ensure that the fit is exquisite, designing & making every For our most particular clients, we offer a Bespoke experience tailor made to your requirements whatever they may be. Please get in touch via the form below if you have an idea of something you would like us to create either from the current collection or a new creation. We can create current collections in a specific size or colour colourway, design new styles and exclusive capsule collections, or create made-to-measure couture lingerie & designer nightwear in the style, colour and fabric of choice.

custom and bespoke requests

In addition at AEMILIA we offer personalisation and customisation to our products. This means that your initials, name or a monogram can be embroidered onto the surface of your product. Gentlemen often add this as a special extra to show that you have brought something unique.

7.     Buying online and return policies...

Purchasing women's lingerie online is a great option. Not only are the style selections much larger, but the anonymity of the experience makes many women and men more comfortable with the idea of purchasing sexy lingerie. Our Online boutique make sizing and prices clearly available and easy to use to facilitate the purchase process.

When buying lingerie online it is important to know the store's return policies. If an item does not fit or is damaged in some way then it is important to know if you can send it back and if there are any additional charges. Many sites list their return policies clearly on their website. Avoid sites that do not allow returns of any kind.

8.     Do I need anything else?

If you feel that you would like to make the gift more complete these are some additional pieces to consider…

1.     silk eye mask

silk eye mask

2.     lingerie bag

In addition if you a creating a ‘look’ we may advise a few key pieces with the accompaniment of a luxury robe or kimono for example. We have illustrated some examples below.

Emerging in line with the A/W 17/18 Nocturne colour forecast, darkest tones of blues and purple also wine have a shadowy, moody quality, presenting seductive alternatives to black.

Dark on Dark: visual depth is created with raised embroidery or lace overlays on shadowy sheers.

Black Accents: shades are darkened further with black accents, such as tulle inserts, lace and satin trims and overlays.

Cosmic Lights: metallic threads in laces and a subdued sheen in mesh and satin bring a nighttime glimmer to tinted darks, perfect for the party season.

deep purple lingerie trends

Deep, inky blues appear almost black, emphasised by combining navy and black threads together within laces and with black trims.

These dark tones have a dusky, shadowy quality, and while everyday styles are flat and smooth, luxury pieces arelifted with metallic threads, giving a cosmic sparkle to moody, midnight shades.

luxury blue hues

Dark claret reds almost transition into black cherry and are rich, deep and dramatic. An interesting mix of luxury and contemporary fabric and detail creates modern, elevated styles, with architecturally placed lace trims, fishnet grounds behind lace patterns and ornate guipures on pared-down silhouettes.

Rich, historic lace with a modern design edge and barely-there sheers for minimalist styles look new in materials.

In details, frills and hardware make a statement, and scalloped edges have a youthful feminine effect. Folded tulle edges create subtle layered looks.

Embroidered and appliqué motifs remain key, with commercial printed bra tops and bodies using placed motifs for the same visual effect.

Young labels and couture-inspired brands use rich embroideries and lace, updating historic looks with modern cuts and erotic detail.

The Luxury Wedding Show creates a platform for unique suppliers of wedding essentials to showcase their work in world class prestigious venues. It provides a stylish and stunning environment for potential customers; an opportunity to see the most unique collection of everything for that luxurious wedding.

By bringing together a selection of the finest wedding suppliers and brides-to-be, The Luxury Wedding Show does something special and unique: it provides a forum for people who share a passion for style and luxury.

AEMILIA at the Luxury Wedding Show

We decided to take the plunge and exhibit at Oakley Court, Windsor which is a beautiful historicquintessential country house. This was a first for AEMILIA as we haven't exhibited at a bridal event before. We discovered Oakley Court Hotel has been the setting of many films, with 118 bedrooms, its own polo team and Her Majesty The Queen is a regular visitor, therefore we thought it was fitting to showcase our beautiful garments.  The venue welcomed the Luxury Wedding Show, and a wide range of exhibitors showcasing their businesses to brides-to-be.

We spent along time preparing for our first Wedding Show, and decided to showcase our new luxury bridal range, A R A BE L L A at the event to beautiful brides-to - be, their family and friends.

I wanted the stand to give the experience of a 'Pop up luxury boutique'. Therefore, I brought along furniture, accessories and branded products reminiscent from the French boudoir era to give a feeling of luxury and elegance. Brides received a goody bag which included a discount voucher and a look book of the latest collection.

The event was a great opportunity to to talk about the brand, what we do and who we are, and share our passion for what we love. We was overwhelmed by the lovely feedback we received about our stand, and the range of garments that we design and make. We hosted a competition for the chance to win an exclusive custom made 'Luxury lingerie set', which gave us the chance to meet many lovely, welcoming guests.

Customisation and special requests

We recognised that brides were curious about our custom made, and bespoke services that we offer, and wanted to know more. It was our pleasure to showcase samples from the new range featuring embroidered details such as 'bride' on the reverse of the Arabella Luxury robe, and our hand placed Swarovski crystals on our beautiful Arabella night gown.

We are already planning a sees of venues to exhibit Luxury wedding fayres and events in the UK and Internationally, and look forward to meeting more beautiful brides.
